"From what I understand, they would need NASA coordination to do the movie, and supposedly Tom Cruise did not want to ask Donald Trump for a favor. You'd need permission from the federal government,"
"Tom didn't want to ask for political reasons."
"actually takes place on Earth, and then the character needs to go up to space to save the day."
"We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make @NASA's ambitious plans a reality."
Tom Cruise scrapped a planned space movie because the project would require NASA coordination and federal permission, and he did not want to ask President Trump for a favor. Cruise had planned to reunite with director Doug Liman and pitched the film to Universal Pictures chair Donna Langley over Zoom during the pandemic. The story largely takes place on Earth but requires a trip to space, and Cruise wanted to travel to the International Space Station for filming. Former NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine expressed excitement about working with Cruise, and Cruise has largely remained apolitical, declining a Kennedy Center Honor from Trump citing "scheduling conflicts."
