The Voice of Hind Rajab: The Emergency Call That Shook the World
"It was a small extract, but this young girl was begging for life,"
"That's not a usual thing to hear; it affected me deeply. I couldn't go on with my daily life. I was left wondering, 'What can I do?'"
"I thought, 'If I find the right way to honour her voice in a cinematic form, maybe the world will sit up and listen?'"
"I needed to be with them, because then the film is not only the story of the killing of a child, which is a tragedy, but it's also the story of those who are tasked with saving lives in Gaza."
On 29 January 2024 five-year-old Hind Rajab pleaded over a crackling mobile phone for rescue from Gaza City while surrounded by six dead family members in a bullet-strewn car. Audio recordings of her last hours were posted online and reached Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania, who felt compelled to respond. Ben Hania chose to create a film that preserves Hind's voice and centers the perspective of Palestinian Red Crescent phone operators who attempted to save her. The project aims to honor Hind's plea, expose the human toll of violence in Gaza, and portray the emotional burden on first responders.
