"Everybody knew at the outset that [the novel's ending] wasn't going to be part of this adaptation."
"Possibly the most nerve-wracking day of the entire production was writing to King with an attachment of the screenplay and pressing send,"
"He realised even before he read it that we weren't going to be doing the ending from the book. He said, 'I was very curious how you were going to tackle the ending, and I think you did a great job.' So I was very happy with that."
Edgar Wright is directing a 2025 adaptation of Stephen King's The Running Man, with Glen Powell starring as Ben Richards. The adaptation will change the novel's bleak ending, which had Richards fly a plane into the skyscraper housing the game's headquarters. The 1987 Schwarzenegger film also altered the finale to a triumphant escape. Concerns about the novel's ending evoking 9/11 contributed to avoiding that conclusion. Wright created a different ending from the 1987 movie and sought King's approval by sending the screenplay; King endorsed Wright's approach and praised the handling of the ending.
