The Big Blue Film Festival at Oregon State University's Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport is a new initiative focused on ocean-themed films that merge art and science. Director MariAnna Hinojosa emphasizes the festival's goal of fostering community engagement by showcasing cinematic success stories from the ocean, moving away from negative narratives about environmental challenges. The festival has seen a rise in submissions, with 220 films in 2023, reflecting a growing interest in ocean-related themes. The inaugural event featured 34 films that highlight various connections to the ocean, promoting awareness and hope.
Our goal is to locate those ocean-themed films at the confluence of science and art, and to really engage the community, raise awareness, and share that.
There are so many wonderful films out there that are being sent our way - from students in grade school all the way to professional films.
We want to find those hope spots and success stories and foster hope in folks and not focus on the doom and gloom.
The 32-minute film depicts the 'tireless efforts' of Mario Castro, a retired commercial fisherman, who transformed Cabo Pulmo into a successful marine park.
