"For the millions who adore Paddington Bear, Michael Bond's marmalade-loving character is the epitome of English politeness and understatement so a new depiction as a drug-taking, potty-mouthed podcast host was always going to prove challenging. But the satirical overhaul of Paddington by the team behind Spitting Image has proved too much for the film studio and estate that own the character's rights."
"He then switches to a generic South American accent before shouting: I am from Peru, motherfuckers I am Paddington Bear from Peru! You most likely remember me from the films Paddington, Paddington 2 and Paddington in Peru. I also had a starring role in the Netflix series Narcos, as Pablo Escobear. It is a joke. Laugh, muchachos. At the end of the episode, a chaotic Paddington is seen snorting a white powder before apparently passing out."
StudioCanal and Michael Bond's estate have filed a high court complaint against Avalon, citing copyright and design right concerns over a Spitting Image parody. Avalon created The Rest Is Bulls*!t, a satirical YouTube show that lampoons public figures and podcast culture and featured a chaotic Paddington puppet alongside a puppet of Prince Harry. The Paddington puppet delivers crude lines, adopts a generic South American accent, boasts of appearances in films and Narcos, and is shown snorting a white powder before passing out. StudioCanal and the estate argue the portrayal departs drastically from Paddington's established benign, polite character from the successful films.
