Phillips made it clear that "With all due respect to [Gunn and Safran], this is kind of a Warner Brothers movie, and that's them also wanting it to be..." He elaborated that they wanted to allow creative filmmaker Todd Phillips to continue his vision without interference, stating how the project was intentionally kept outside the purview of the newly formed DC Studios.
Co-writer Scott Silver noted that "Folie à Deux began production before Gunn and Safran took on their roles as DC Studios co-bosses in October 2022," indicating that the film's development timeline and creative choices were established independent of the new leadership.
Phillips confirmed that Gunn and Safran did view a cut of Folie à Deux prior to the film's release, stating, "Folie à Deux is not a 'DC proper' film." This classification places the Joker series outside the main continuity of DC's superhero canon, allowing for creative liberties.
Although Folie à Deux has earned more than $120 million worldwide after its first weekend, Phillips acknowledged that it was "falling well short of the original in terms of box office performance." He mentioned the expectation that it wouldn't match the original's monumental success.
