Peter Craig, known for co-writing blockbusters like Gladiator II and The Batman, is now taking a significant leap with his new crime series, Dope Thief, produced by Ridley Scott for Apple TV+. The show features two down-on-their-luck friends, played by Bryan Tyree Henry and Wagner Moura, who impersonate DEA agents to rob small-time drug dealers. Craig reflects on his journey from writing lesser-known crime novels to screenwriting, and expresses excitement about telling a story centered on morally ambiguous characters who aren't quite formidable in the criminal world, blending humor and heart.
I started writing these crime novels that not that many people read... I took to screenwriting and I really liked it, but right as I started to miss writing novels, [Dope Thief] came along.
I wanted to tell a story about guys who really want to be badasses, but they're just not bad enough to be badasses.
All our movies are always about people that are the absolute best at what they're doing, and I don't know that many people like that in my life.
It felt like going back to crime and the pace of writing a novel.
