Ayo Edebiri has signed on to write a new live-action Barney film, possibly starring as well. Produced by A24 and Daniel Kaluuya’s 59% Productions, alongside Mattel Films, the film aims to provide a new perspective on the beloved children’s character. Initially announced in 2019, the project has seen renewed interest with Edebiri's involvement. In addition to Barney, Mattel is developing various nostalgic properties for film adaptations, including View-Master and American Girl Doll movies.
Mattel's Robbie Brenner expressed excitement to have Kaluuya in the fold, saying that the studio could take a 'completely new approach to Barney that will surprise audiences and subvert expectations.'
