Academy apologizes for muted response to Palestinian director's assault
Briefly

Leaders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have issued an apology following backlash from members regarding a failure to address the violent incident involving Hamdan Ballal, an Oscar-winning Palestinian director. Amid criticism for not mentioning the attack directly in an earlier statement, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang acknowledged their misstep and condemned violence against artists. Over 600 members, including notable Oscar winners, expressed their disappointment, asserting that neglecting to defend an artist after awarding their work is unacceptable, representing a broader threat to creative expression.
On Wednesday, we sent a letter in response to reports of violence against Oscar winner Hamdan Ballal, co-director of 'No Other Land,' connected to his artistic expression.
It is indefensible for an organization to recognize a film with an award in the first week of March, and then fail to defend its filmmakers just a few weeks later.
