"Mixed materials, unexpected shapes, and pairings of ideas that sound like they shouldn't work together and yet work very, very well are hallmarks of founder Diaki Suzuki's output. That's why the Japanese-born, New York-based designer has been tapped by companies ranging from Brooks Brothers and Allen Edmonds to Barbour and Uniqlo for countless collaborations over the years."
""Manhattanism" is a term that originated in the construction industry, where it was used by several notable architects. I first learned it from the title of a column in a magazine published in New York in the late 1970s. Literally, it refers to a style of architecture and urban planning, but I personally take it as Manhattan-style fashion. In the '70s, the trend in New York was for Manhattan-like styles such as sneakers with suits or sweatpants with blazers."
Engineered Garments exemplifies an offbeat yet inviting menswear aesthetic defined by mixed materials, unexpected shapes, and unconventional pairings. Founder Daiki Suzuki, Japanese-born and New York–based, has a history of collaborations with brands such as Brooks Brothers, Allen Edmonds, Barbour, and Uniqlo. The new partnership pairs Engineered Garments with GU, a youth-focused sister brand to Uniqlo expanding in the American market. The collection, titled Manhattanism, contains five styles that prioritize ingenuity and affordability. Notable pieces include a heavyweight sweatshirt and a padded shell parka. Manhattanism draws on 1970s New York trends that mixed formal and casual elements, like sneakers with suits.
