How Nigeria lost its textile market to Chinese imports DW 03/21/2025
Briefly

Nigeria's textile production, once a cornerstone of its economy and a source of employment for thousands, has faced a severe decline due to cheap imports from China. In the 1990s, the industry thrived, supported by local cotton farmers and numerous textile factories. However, today, only a handful of factories remain operational as they struggle against China’s integrated supply chain and lower production costs. The depreciation of Nigeria's naira further complicates the situation, making recovery for the industry increasingly daunting.
"Today, however, only a few factories remain, and even those are struggling amid the influx of cheap textiles from abroad particularly from China."
"China already produces all the raw materials," says Anibe Achimugu, president of the National Cotton Association of Nigeria (NACOTAN). "This means they can produce at a cheaper price."
