Spain's Supreme Court upheld embezzlement charges against Catalan secessionist leader Carles Puigdemont, effectively overruling an amnesty agreed by politicians in the country.
The court stated that the amnesty law is not applicable to the crime of misuse of public funds, keeping the arrest warrant against Puigdemont and two other Catalan politicians in place.
Judge Pablo Llarena argued that Puigdemont, Comin, and Puig had gained financially by using regional treasury money for the 2017 independence referendum, potentially damaging Spain's financial interests.
