Danylo Halytskyi International Airport in Lviv may resume commercial flights by late spring or summer, according to director Tetiana Romanovska. Seven airlines, including SkyUp and Lufthansa, have shown interest in starting operations shortly after reopening. The Ukrainian government is also considering reopening Uzhhorod airport near the Slovak border. Romanovska highlighted the importance of summer for travel and the preparations airlines have made to audit and assess the viability of returning flights to and from Ukraine.
SkyUP will likely take the lead in bringing back charter flights, as they have a well-developed route network in Europe and are ready to resume the same routes from Lviv or another Ukrainian city.
We hope the airport will reopen in the summer period because that's when aviation traffic is at its highest-during vacations, long daylight hours, and peak travel season.
This year, airline representatives have reached out to us, conducted their audits, and are analyzing the situation. Wizz Air completed its audit last year.
The Ukrainian government is also looking into reopening another airport in the West of the country in Uzhhorod which is on the border with Slovakia and close to Poland and Hungary.
