The European Commission imposed a €200 million fine on Meta and a €500 million fine on Apple under the new Digital Markets Act, aimed at enhancing competition. These penalties have sparked accusations from US firms that Europe is treating American companies unfairly, particularly amidst ongoing tensions with the Trump administration. Meta's response pointed out that the fines and required business model changes are seen as hindering their operations while allowing European and Chinese firms more leeway. The fines are minor compared to previous penalties against both companies, highlighting growing regulatory scrutiny in the EU.
"The European Commission is attempting to handicap successful American businesses while allowing Chinese and European companies to operate under different standards," said Joel Kaplan, Meta's chief global affairs officer.
"This isn't just about a fine. The Commission forcing us to change our business model effectively imposes a multi-billion-dollar tariff on Meta while requiring us to offer an inferior service."
