Huawei says it has a breakthrough that enables manufacturing semiconductor chips with transistor density comparable to the 1.4-nanometer processes expected from competitors such as TSMC and Samsung. The claim would be significant because Huawei has faced expanding US trade sanctions since 2019 that limit access to specialized equipment used to reach advanced nodes. TSMC has disclosed a 1.4nm process planned for production in 2028. Huawei’s chip head He Tingbo said the process is feasible and affordable. Huawei currently relies on Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp, which produces 7nm chips used in Huawei Mate 60 smartphones.
