The total number of Indian-born people leaving Sweden in the first half of 2024 has surged to 2,837— a dramatic 171% increase from the same period last year. This marks a troubling turn in what has been two decades of steady Indian immigration to Sweden, positioning Indians as the largest group of emigrants in the country, surpassing individuals from nations like Iraq and China.
According to Robin Sukhia, secretary-general of the Sweden-India Business Council, while the statistics may raise eyebrows, he advises against hastily drawing conclusions. He suggests the reasons behind this migration trend could stem from various factors including rising living costs in Sweden, a lack of available accommodation, and potential statistical margins of error, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive year-long assessment.
Despite the recent emigration trends, Indians continue to represent one of the largest groups of new immigrants in Sweden for 2024, albeit with a significant drop in numbers—2,461 individuals compared to 3,681 in the previous year. It is notable that these immigration figures, when excluding the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021, reflect the lowest level since 2017, following years of increased immigration since 2009.
