Current geopolitical tensions have led European companies to reconsider their reliance on US cloud services, prompting interest in local alternatives. Despite concerns about European digital sovereignty, local providers struggle to compete with major US cloud services in scale and offerings. However, experts suggest that while European clouds like OVHcloud and Hetzner may lack the breadth of AWS or Azure, they can excel in specific capabilities. Additionally, hybrid solutions utilizing both European and US providers are proposed as a way forward to balance data sovereignty and service requirements.
Not all projects need global scale, and I'd be more than happy with a solid virtual private server (VPS), where I can deploy my services as a Docker container.
European cloud providers are supposed to provide alternatives to US hyperscalers while addressing data sovereignty concerns, with varying levels of protection from foreign surveillance laws.
While European providers may not match the breadth of services offered by AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, they might excel in specific areas.
One possible approach is hybrid solutions that combine European providers for sensitive workloads with hyperscalers for other needs.
