The European Union's dependence on Russian fertilizer has increased sharply, rising from 17% of its fertilizer imports in 2022 to around 30% in 2023, despite the ongoing sanctions on Russian oil and gas. In 2023, Russia emerged as the largest global exporter of fertilizers, which are essential for food production. The EU Parliament has proposed introducing staggering tariffs on these imports, aiming to increase the tariff to 50% by 2028, partly to address food security concerns and reduce dependency on Russian products.
