The UK government has rejected claims by Mauritius' Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam that a renegotiated deal over the Chagos Islands would result in higher payments due to inflation-linked adjustments. Last October, the UK committed to transferring sovereignty of the islands to Mauritius while retaining a military lease on Diego Garcia. Prime Minister Ramgoolam criticized previous agreements as unfavorable to Mauritius, expressing confidence in upcoming negotiations despite the UK Foreign Office's stance that they will only agree to terms beneficial to the UK.
The UK will only sign a deal that is in our national interest, countering Mauritian claims about the financial terms of the renegotiated agreement.
