A leaked chat among top Trump national security officials exposed a strong disdain for Europe, particularly regarding financial burdens associated with military operations. US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Vice President JD Vance criticized what they termed "European free-loading" while discussing military strikes on Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. Vance emphasized that the US actions would benefit Europe significantly, given the disproportionate trade reliance. The conversation, which raised concerns about classified communication on an unauthorized platform, hinted at possible misalignment between military strategy and diplomatic messaging towards Europe.
I fully share your loathing of European free-loading. It's pathetic.
Three per cent of US trade runs through the Suez. 40% of European trade does.
I am not sure the president is aware how inconsistent this is with his message on Europe right now.
It will have to be the United States that reopens the Suez.
