The European Parliament approved a vote to ban meat-related names on plant-based products, prohibiting terms such as steak, burger, sausage or escalope for vegetable or plant-protein items. Suggested alternatives include less appetising descriptors like discs or tubes. Paul McCartney and eight British MPs wrote to the European Commission urging rejection of the ban, arguing it addresses a nonexistent problem and would slow progress on climate goals. McCartney emphasized that labeling products as plant-based, vegetarian or vegan should make contents clear. Growth in plant-based foods has prompted backlash from farming and meat distribution industries worried about job impacts.
