Malta faces significant water scarcity, relying largely on desalination for its drinking water due to a lack of lakes, rivers, and limited rainfall. With climate change exacerbating water stress, Malta has implemented innovative solutions like smart water meters and wastewater reuse. Currently, about two-thirds of its potable water is derived from desalinated sources. As one-fifth of Europe experiences water stress and demand is projected to double by 2050, the situation raises serious concerns for water availability across the continent, affecting various sectors and communities.
"We have lived forever without enough water," said Thomas Bajada, a marine biologist and recently elected member of the European Parliament.
"Europe is at the forefront of a growing water crisis - one that threatens industry, agriculture, ecosystems and citizens' access to water," said Loic Charpentier.
