Thousands of Georgians have taken to the streets for six consecutive nights after the ruling Georgian Dream party’s move to suspend the bid to join the EU, reigniting opposition protests.
Experts said that by suspending talks with the EU for the next four years, the party had shown it was decisively pivoting to Russia and dispensing with its European aspirations.
Kobakhidze's surprise announcement removed much of the ambiguity in the party's position on EU membership, which it claimed was still a goal despite antagonizing the bloc.
