The European Commission is taking the British government to court over alleged violations of the rights of EU citizens in the UK, casting a cloud over Keir Starmer's attempted post-Brexit reset.
The commission announced that it was referring the government to the European court of justice for alleged failure to protect EU citizens' rights in the UK after Brexit, amid scrutiny over safeguarding these rights.
Concerns about the certificate of application for EU citizens, which is meant to provide them proof of their residency rights, have been raised by the UK's Independent Monitoring Authority.
The EU has indicated it will proceed with new agreements only after the UK demonstrates full compliance with the existing rights of EU citizens under the Brexit withdrawal agreement.
