The European Commission is enforcing stricter customs controls on online retailers like Shein and Temu to combat the influx of unsafe low-value products entering the EU. With a staggering 4.6 billion parcels arriving last year, many items do not meet EU safety standards, undermining local enterprises. Vice-President Henna Virkkunen emphasized the need for a competitive e-commerce environment that safeguards consumer health while also addressing the environmental challenges posed by cheap imports. Proposed measures include removing duty exemptions on imports below €150 and implementing handling fees to cover enforcement costs.
The rise in online shopping has led to an influx of low-value products, many of which do not comply with EU laws, jeopardizing consumer safety.
The European Commission is committed to ensuring a safe e-commerce sector that values consumer protection and environmental respect in light of increased market pressures.
