The government plans to restore a buffer zone at the border and implement the Eastern Shield project at a cost of 10 billion zlotys for enhanced border security.
"If taken to the extreme, they could pave a path of democratic erosion and creeping authoritarianism, all under the pretext of border security," says Nina Perkowski, a sociology professor at Hamburg University.
The blame for the tense border situation is attributed to Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin by supporters of the 'securitization of the Polish side of the border.'
