Russian intelligence services have gone a bit feral, frankly, Richard Moore, the head of MI6, said in September. This alarming behavior showcases a marked increase in reckless actions aimed at undermining Western nations by targeting individuals linked to arms supplies for Ukraine.
The most serious threat was an assassination plot targeting Armin Papperger, the CEO of the German defence company Rheinmetall. Though this was detected, other arms industry executives around Europe were also said to have been targeted by Russian assassins, amplifying the risk to key figures involved in supporting Ukraine.
Police are investigating whether Russian spies posted incendiary devices via DHL around Europe, to Birmingham in the UK and Leipzig in Germany. This posed a significant risk, reflecting a perilous new phase of Russian operations which could endanger lives if not curtailed.
The aim of these grey zone attacks, orchestrated by the Russian GRU military intelligence, is to sow chaos among Ukraine's partners, disrupt military supplies to Kyiv, and widen splits in support for Ukraine across Europe.
