NASA has announced that the risk of asteroid 2024 YR4 impacting Earth has dropped to 1.5%, down from 3.1%, following new calculations. This asteroid, measuring between 40-90 meters, is projected to approach Earth on December 22, 2032, but is unlikely to cause a global catastrophe. The European Space Agency (ESA) has reported even lower odds at 1.38%. Experts expect the risk of an impact to eventually reach zero, though a 0.8% chance of hitting the Moon remains.
The risk of an asteroid striking Earth in eight years has decreased to 1.5%, according to NASA, down from a previous high of 3.1%.
Richard Moissl from ESA stated that the probability reduction was expected as the uncertainty area for the asteroid's impact shifts off Earth.
