In a thrilling upset at the Indian Wells tournament, Tallon Griekspoor defeated top seed Alexander Zverev in a grueling match lasting over three hours. Griekspoor, who had previously lost to Zverev six times after an initial victory, secured the win by maintaining composure in crucial moments, notably overcoming multiple match points. Zverev expressed disappointment in his current form, acknowledging that he is not playing at the level he desires after a previous loss to world No. 1 Jannik Sinner. Griekspoor advances to face Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the next round.
"Finally," Griekspoor wrote with a smiley face on the TV camera lens after the hard-fought victory.
"I'm incredibly proud. It was such a mental battle to beat him," Griekspoor said. "I beat him once but then lost the next six times, so it was such a mental thing. Happy to finally get it out of the way."
"I'm just not playing good tennis at the moment. It's as simple as that," he told reporters.
"Right now it's not clicking," Zverev said. "I have to find a way to make that happen."
