In 2024, asylum applications in the EU, Norway, and Switzerland decreased by around 12%, totaling just over 1 million initial applications, according to the EUAA.
Germany remained the most popular migrant destination, receiving 235,925 initial applications, yet saw a significant 30.2% decrease compared to 2023's figures.
The EUAA report highlighted that the main countries of origin for applicants were Syria (15%), Afghanistan (8.7%), Venezuela (7.3%), and Turkey (5.5%).
Asylum and migration policies are central to the upcoming German election in February, with the far-right AfD party gaining traction through anti-immigrant rhetoric.
