New research reveals that paper receipts from major US retailers contain hazardous levels of Bisphenol S (BPS), with even a 10-second touch exceeding safety limits. In response, the Center for Environmental Health has alerted about 50 companies, including Burger King and Walmart, regarding their non-compliant receipts. The alarming concentrations of BPS raise serious health concerns, reflecting past research on related chemicals like BPA, linked to severe health issues. Whereas the FDA deems BPA safe, the EU has banned it in food-contact products, highlighting global regulatory disparities.
"The concentrations were so high that touching only one receipt with BPS for 10 seconds resulted in exposure above the safe harbor level which requires a clear and reasonable warning to consumers," Mihir Vohra, science lead at CEH, said in a statement about the findings.
"[The findings were] really eye-opening for us," Vohra told the Guardian. "They really speak to just how high the concentrations of BPS are in these receipts."
