UK national parks warn of catastrophic' risk from wildfires this Easter
Briefly

Britain's national parks have issued urgent warnings about an increased wildfire risk this Easter season, following one of the driest early springs on record. Park rangers highlight that prolonged warm weather and breezy conditions have left many areas exceptionally dry. While many parks have seen recent rain, it hasn't mitigated the fire danger. With a startling increase in wildfires this year compared to 2022, park authorities are urging the public to be cautious, particularly with activities like barbecues and smoking, which could ignite dry vegetation and lead to catastrophic fires, harming wildlife and ecosystems.
Ben Jackson, who leads rangers in part of the North York Moors national park, emphasized that the recent climate has created ideal conditions for a potentially catastrophic wildfire that threatens wildlife and habitats as well as poses serious dangers to people.
The National Fire Chiefs Council reported that there have been more than double the number of wildfires in England and Wales compared to the same period in 2022, following a record year of wildfires.
