Trump Admin Weakens Air Standards While Almost Half of US Kids Breathe Toxic Air
"Nearly half of the nation's children live in places with dangerous levels of air pollution, according to a report released by the American Lung Association. This equates to 33.5 million children, or 46 percent of the country's kids, living in areas with failing grades for at least one measure of air pollution that is particularly harmful to developing lungs."
"The report found that people of color are more than twice as likely as white people to live in a community with failing grades for all three measures of air pollution. Latinos are more than three times as likely to live in such communities, unchanged from last year's report."
"Progress is fragile, said Will Barrett, the ALA's assistant vice president for nationwide clean air policy. We have a lot of work left to do to make sure that every child in the United States grows up breathing healthy air."
According to a report by the American Lung Association, 33.5 million children, or 46 percent of U.S. kids, reside in areas with harmful air pollution. Communities of color are disproportionately affected, with Latinos being over three times more likely to live in such areas. Although air quality improved for decades after the 1970 Clean Air Act, recent climate change effects, including heat and wildfires, have reversed some progress. The latest report indicates a slight decrease in highly polluted areas, but ozone pollution continues to worsen.
