Snow! Time-lapse videos show the Sierra blanketed in white
"With an atmospheric river bringing rain and snow to California this week, the state's mountains began to change from summer brown to winter white. Mammoth Mountain expected around 2 feet of snow by Tuesday night. The UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab forecast up to a foot at its location near Lake Tahoe, lab director Andrew Schwartz said. The snow arrived at a moment when snowpack levels were down to nearly zero across the Sierra Nevada range after melting off over the summer."
"Amazing satellite imagery of the incredible October storm roaring through California.Multiple Tornado Warnings on the Central Coast, flooding in the Bay Area, the first Severe Thunderstorm Watch in the Los Angeles region in 17 years, and heavy snow in the Sierra Nevada. pic.twitter.com/PF0C4Vn88l- Colin McCarthy (@US_Stormwatch) October 14, 2025 By Tuesday afternoon, many of the mountain cameras across the Golden State maintained by UC San Diego's ALERTCalifornia camera network showed whiteout conditions."
An atmospheric river brought rain and snow across California, turning mountain slopes from brown to white and producing heavy snowfall at high elevations. Mammoth Mountain expected about two feet of snow while the UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab forecast up to a foot near Lake Tahoe. Snowpack across the Sierra Nevada had been nearly zero after summer melt, and the storm began rebuilding those levels. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recently declared La Niña conditions, which influence drought. Satellite imagery showed the storm’s intensity, prompting tornado warnings, flooding, a rare severe thunderstorm watch in Los Angeles, and whiteout conditions on mountain cameras.
