The SeaCURE project, initiated on England's south coast, seeks to combat climate change by removing CO2 from the ocean, which absorbs nearly a third of atmospheric CO2. Unlike traditional carbon capture from air, SeaCURE focuses on seawater, leveraging its significantly higher concentration of dissolved carbon. The process involves treating seawater to increase acidity, thereby releasing CO2, which is then buried while the treated water returns to the ocean. Though it can only remove up to 100 metric tons of CO2 annually at this stage, SeaCURE envisions potential for substantial global impact with renewable energy and scaling up efforts.
Seawater has got loads of carbon in it compared to the air, about 150 times more. But it has got different challenges, the energy requirements to generate the products that we require to do this from seawater are huge.
What we're doing by spreading the seawater on a large surface area. It's a bit like pouring a drink on the floor and allowing the CO2 to come out of the seawater really quickly.
