A significant heat dome has settled over much of Southern Europe, including Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, and others, pushing temperatures above 40C. Recently, Spain recorded a staggering 46C in the south, indicating a concerning trend of increasing heat events attributed to climate change. The Department of Foreign Affairs has urged travelers to take precautions against heat-related illnesses, highlighting risks for vulnerable populations. As many flock to tourist destinations, the risk of heatstroke rises, with advice to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours. Ireland is also experiencing record warm nights, though not as extreme.
Extreme temperatures are dangerous for all, but pose particular risks to young children, the elderly and people with underlying health conditions.
The Department of Foreign Affairs has advised all travellers to affected areas to take precautions and be acutely aware of the symptoms of heatstroke.
