Its official, storks are returning to London for the first time in 600 years
"No matter where we live or how much money we earn, we all have the right to experience the beauty of nature."
"This year, London saw the most summer wildfires since the record-breaking heatwave of 2022. In the decades to come, extreme heat and flash flooding will become an ever more ordinary part of our lives. If we want to protect Londoners from the worst consequences of our rapidly warming world, then improving our natural environment isn't just the right thing to do, it's essential."
"reinstating the animals, with the help of London Wildlife Trust, is a bold and historic moment. This is a once in a generation chance to witness nature's comeback into your own backyard."
Beavers and white storks will be introduced to east London at Eastbrookend Country Park and The Chase after council approval. City Hall funds a rewilding programme to inject biodiversity across parts of London. A family of beavers will be released into a lakeside enclosure at The Chase in March 2027, while white storks will be housed in a special aviary at Eastbrookend Country Park. Beavers have returned to the capital since 2023 after an absence of around 400 years. The project involves London Wildlife Trust and uses former landfill sites as habitats to improve natural environments and bolster climate resilience.
