Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is advancing a project to apply AI and improved data to accelerate infrastructure permitting and environmental review. The project released an updated dataset of over 120,000 permitting documents, NEPATEC 2.0, containing public NEPA documents across 60,000 projects. A custom AI algorithm was used to aggregate documents from siloed agency systems and extract metadata to improve filtering and search. The initiative began under the previous administration to speed permitting for clean energy and continues under the current administration to modernize permitting for oil and gas and data center buildouts. The effect of regulatory rollbacks and reduced staffing remains unclear.
