EXPLAINED: Why are the lights going off in Germany for an hour on Saturday?
Briefly

Earth Hour, initiated by WWF in 2007, encourages global participation to raise awareness about climate change. On March 22nd, from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM, landmarks like the Brandenburg Gate and the Colosseum will dim their lights. In Germany alone, 517 municipalities are involved. Beyond individual participation, WWF emphasizes the need for climate protection to be embedded in government policies. This year's campaign includes engaging performances throughout Germany, heightening the event's visibility and encouraging collective action towards a sustainable future.
The WWF say 517 cities and municipalities across Germany have so far signed up to Earth Hour to help protect the planet from irreversible changes.
Private households and companies can also get involved in the annual campaign and... spend those 60 minutes doing something positive for the planet.
