On Thursday, Environment Secretary Steve Reed convened a meeting with major landowners in England, including representatives of the monarchy and conservation organizations, to develop plans aimed at restoring nature on their estates. This initiative seeks to meet legally binding targets set by the Environment Act, as current conservation efforts fall short. Reed emphasized the need for collaborative action in land management to protect and restore nature effectively. The government aims to increase protected areas from 8% to 30% by 2030 amid ongoing biodiversity declines.
Landowners must go further and faster to restore our natural world. The National Estate for Nature, who manage a tenth of the land in this country, have a responsibility to future generations to leave the environment in a better state.
We have a unique opportunity to work together on common sense changes that create a win-win for nature, the economy, and make the best use of the land around us.
