Almost Half of US Data Centers That Were Supposed to Open This Year Slated to Be Canceled or Delayed
""If one piece of your supply chain is delayed, then your whole project can't deliver. It is a pretty wild puzzle at the moment.""
""Among data centers slated to open in 2027, only about 6.3 gigawatts worth of computing infrastructure are actually under construction, compared to 21.5 announced gigawatts.""
Many data centers planned for the US are experiencing delays or cancellations, with only a third of those set to open in 2026 currently under construction. For 2027, only 6.3 gigawatts of the announced 21.5 gigawatts are being built. The situation worsens for projects between 2028 and 2032, with most not yet started. Supply chain bottlenecks, particularly for electrical components, are causing these delays, as firms struggle to source necessary materials from abroad, leading to longer build times.
