Wayne Rooney announced himself to the footballing fraternity as a 16-year-old in October 2002, ending Arsenal's 30-match unbeaten run with a sublime finish from outside of the box.

Tyldesley describes how his iconic commentary line 'Remember the name: Wayne Rooney' came about, saying, 'I sort of nicked it, because the name on the back of his shirt was staring me in the face as he ran away to celebrate.'

Rooney's Euro 2004 performance, where he scored four goals in four matches, solidified his status, earning him a place in UEFA's Team of the Tournament and leading to Manchester United signing him.

Despite his early promise, it took Rooney another 18 months to settle into Premier League football, managing six goals in his first season and nine in the next.
