Risa Shimizu, who joined Manchester City from West Ham this summer, has suffered an ACL injury during the Olympic games, requiring successful surgery.
The club confirmed that Shimizu sustained the injury in Japan's Olympic group-stage defeat to Spain, and she will now focus on her rehabilitation.
Despite her injury, Shimizu is set to continue her recovery at Manchester City as they prepare for their Women's Super League opener against Arsenal.
Having turned down an offer to stay with West Ham, Shimizu's move to City was seen as a major signing for the club this season.
