I feared people would leak my addiction - Shilton
Peter Shilton, 76, lives on Mersea Island in Essex and said he avoided getting help for gambling addiction because he feared it would leak to the press. Over 45 years he lost more than £1m betting on horseracing, quitting in 2015. He launched Shiltons' Silverlining to support rehabilitation, debt management, and prevention. The charity is backed by Gary Lineker, Terry Butcher, Paul Parker, and cricket icon Graham Gooch. Steph Shilton said “heartbreaking” figures motivated the charity after Peter urged them to do more.
"“Being quite well known, it's difficult [to get help] because you're frightened it's going to get out and somebody's going to [write] it in the press, it's going to go haywire,” he said."
