Former Tottenham defender Vertonghen to retire
Briefly

Jan Vertonghen, the former Tottenham Hotspur defender and Belgium international, announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 37. With 315 appearances for Spurs and a record 157 caps for Belgium, Vertonghen had a significant career, including being part of the team that reached the 2019 Champions League final. He cited increasing difficulty in physical preparation as the primary reason for his retirement. Despite his limited play due to injury this season, he has enjoyed success across several leagues, including winning the Portuguese league with Benfica.
"I have noticed that it is becoming more and more difficult to prepare myself physically for training sessions and matches and to show myself as the player I want to be."
"That is why I will be stopping after this season."
Vertonghen retired from international football last year as the record appearance holder for Belgium with 157 caps.
He helped the club reach the Champions League final in 2019.
