The transition to college presents unique challenges for student veterans, who often struggle with the freedoms and choices that come with civilian life compared to the structured military environment. At UTSA, a new course has been introduced to help these veterans adjust to university life, build community, and leverage their military experiences as assets. This initiative is crucial in addressing the feelings of disconnect that veterans face when interacting with younger, non-military peers, ultimately aiding their academic and personal development as they pursue their educational goals.
The course is also designed to help consider their military training from an asset-based perspective, recognizing skills like teamwork and discipline that veterans bring to academia.
Once you leave that, it's an open book. Many veterans struggle with the freedom of choice compared to the structured path they experienced in the military.
