Teacher unions voice concerns over lack of consultation on phone ban amid recruitment crisis
Briefly

We note the Minister's comments yesterday in relation to mobile phones and we await the guidance that she has said she will send to schools. In this regard, it is important to note that many schools already have policies in place that work well.
As schools reopen this week, the Minister's focus has been on a notional ban on smartphones in second-level classrooms. This sounds good in principle and such a ban would be positive if workable solutions could be found.
The Minister should be focused instead on tackling teacher shortages with schools across the country 'scrambling' to fill vacancies. Other urgent issues facing schools around the country - such as teacher vacancies and capitation grant shortfalls - are all within the Minister's gift to resolve.
