Strict school 'harmful' to some pupils, review says
"The review, commissioned by the City & Hackney Safeguarding Children Partnership, into Mossbourne Victoria Park Academy (MVPA) found that shouting, public humiliation and a lack of support for pupils with special needs took place. It examined 73 accounts relating to MVPA, alongside testimony from parents, pupils, teachers and external professionals. The Mossbourne Federation said it is "committed to doing everything in its power to ensure the best outcomes for every child who attends its schools"."
"The report identified several practices of concern, including: routine shouting at pupils "desking", where children are placed at corridor desks for minor issues sanctions given to pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (Send) for behaviours linked to their conditions some groups including pupils with Send and certain ethnic groups being disproportionately sanctioned, without evidence this was monitored. Mental-health professionals told the review the school's culture could intensify anxiety and other conditions."
Mossbourne Victoria Park Academy, a high-performing comprehensive in east London, maintained a rigid behaviour system that prioritized compliance and control over pupil wellbeing. Seventy-three accounts plus testimony from parents, pupils, teachers and external professionals described routine shouting, public humiliation, corridor "desking" for minor issues, and sanctions applied to pupils with special educational needs and disabilities for behaviours linked to their conditions. Governors failed to scrutinise behaviour practices or examine sanction data. Some groups, including pupils with SEND and certain ethnic groups, were disproportionately sanctioned without evidence of monitoring. Mental-health professionals linked the culture to increased anxiety and lasting distress.
