A new Black studies curriculum in NYC public schools includes lessons on Sandy Ground, the oldest free Black settlement in the US, still inhabited by descendants of the original settlers.
Students will learn about Sandy Ground in 2nd and 8th grade, exploring its history through maps, population charts, photographs, newspapers, biographies, and historical artifacts.
