Skyline High students stage walkout protest against 'unsafe conditions'
"A call to action posted by students said they were walking out to stand against "Unsafe conditions," "a lack of student protection," and the "administration failing to take action.""
""We deserve better," the announcement reads. "We deserve to feel safe, we deserve to be heard.""
""The violence that we're seeing in schools, in the city and nationwide is disgusting," Beere said. "You know, these are our children, and having access to firearms alone is unbelievable, let alone that violence is occurring in and around our campuses.""
Hundreds of Skyline High School students walked out to protest gun violence after a campus shooting prompted a lockdown. A teenage student was shot on Nov. 12, received police-assisted medical attention, and was transported to a local hospital; the injured student is expected to recover. Two minors were arrested and charged, and officers recovered two ghost guns. Students cited unsafe conditions, a lack of student protection, and administrative failure to act, and they demanded safety and to be heard. Assistant Police Chief James Beere condemned school violence, and Principal Rebecca Huang scheduled a town meeting to address concerns.
